I'd wanted to visit the Rothko Chapel for years, but had at least an awareness of the main art museum in Houston, too. We'll visit both, today.
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is one of the really significant art museums in the country. It's large and is evidently getting even larger. The two buildings (below) that I was in are across the street for each other, but are joined by an underground passageway. Behind me (as I stood taking these photographs) is an even larger complex under construction that will add considerably more area to the museum. I gather that there will also be underground connections between all three buildings.
This is "Cloud Column" by Anish Kapoor (who also did "The Bean" in Chicago).
The Rothko Chapel was opened in 1970 as a dedicated place for paintings by Mark Rothko. The building and the paintings were intended as a single, unified work.

Photographs are not allowed inside the chapel, but there are plenty of images to be seen online. It is a remarkable place.
