Little Salt Marsh is within the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford County, Kansas
This isn't a survey of the whole refuge; it's just a few photographs of the marsh in October. You might call it a lake, but you could probably walk across it and keep your head above the surface (although you might get stuck in the muck).
It's not a spectacular bird, but at least it was closer than the others.
The marsh is an important stopover for migratory birds--particularly cranes.
Alarming the birds just to get them to fly is a low thing to do, so I waited a good while. They were noisy, but were content to stay where they were.
Cropping the photo for a closer look doesn't really take the place of a (missing) telephoto lens.
